Kanyavee, Song by Amarasiri Pieris

In the wake of his performance in Sydney, I consider it is timely to introduce Amarasiri Pieris to readers through one of his celebrated songs. Though he was no stranger to Sri Lankan music for many years as a musician, Pieris began his singing career some what late in life, back in the 90s. His fame as a singer rose to its pinnacle in a very short time with the theme song for the movie, ‘Situ Medura’ directed by Parakram Niriella and won him both ‘Swarna Sanka’ and ‘Sarasavi' awards as the best singer. The song “Kanyavee’, is a musical experience of exceptional quality greatly enhanced by a melody, beyond the conventional form.

The song, written by Lucien Bulathsinhala and composed by Maestro Premasiri Kemadasa blended beautifully with the theatrical form to such an extent that the song and the cinematic experience could not be seen from one apart.

The movie centered around the male protagonist, crippled and aphonic as a result of a major accident. However, he was a musician and therefore music was his language. He develops a spiritual dialogue with his sister-in-law through her ability to play the piano. Till then he seem to have had a relationship with the illiterate maid of his ‘ Sirimedura’ household. Amidst her ignorance, the maid begins to feel, that her rights are being challenged by music that is strange to her. The song is played at the climax of this triangular conflict.”

“I realised that Kemadasa has moved within the frames (of the film) with his music, and therefore I wanted to achieve it my self, with my lyrics.

The sexuality of this love triangle reminded me of an old poem

I framed my song within those lines" says the lyricist Lucien Bulathsinhala .
